Aviation is bringing Formula 1 to Miami
Everyone is excited about the arrival of The United States Grand Prix in Miami but what does it mean for the city’s aviation industry? The sport welcomes its 69th around the world. Anywhere The Formula One World Championship goes, it makes a huge impact on multiple industries but moving equipment, cars, drivers, and teams are made possible thanks to Aviation.
United States Grand Prix
Miami Circuit will become the 11th circuit in the USA to host an F1 Grand Prix. USA has been involved in the European-based sport since 1950 with its first US circuit located at Indianapolis where races were hosted for 17 years. Big names like Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard, and Rubens Barrichello were able to experience the first-ever American track, back in year 2000.
Also, Miami is the second circuit located in Florida after Sebring International Raceway which hosted only one race in 1959.
The United States Grand Prix is held in Austin, Texas since 2012; This year 2022 is making history where two American circuits will participate in the One World Championship, Austin & Miami.
A Sport On The Move
Private Jets
After traveling from city to city with each race, many teams and drivers have discovered the convenience and flexibility of owning an aircraft. Max Verstappen, who’s 24 years old, purchased his own french manufacturer Dassault Falcon-900EX Jet, to travel to every race around the world and for his leisure travel. This jet was previously owned by another big name, Richard Branson. Coincidentally, Spanish driver Fernando Alonso owns an older version of the same plane, a Dassault Falcon-900.
I can’t forget to mention the winner of 7 championship Lewis Hamilton, who used to own a Bombardier Challenger 605, before selling it to reduce his carbon footprint, he also got an electric car and became vegan.
Their racing teams also get involved in business aviation by renting charter services for their team members to reach their destinations smoothly. More so with the Covid 19 pandemic, the Mercedes Team announced that in order to meet race schedules along with travel restrictions, private charter are their best option.
Some drivers choose to fly commercial in business or first class, usually for longer distances to places like Tokyo or Singapore.
Cargo planes
Formula One has partnered with DHL since 2004, the longest proud partnership, to haul F1 cars, race equipment, electronics, and more around the world for each race since their partnership began. By air and by sea, DHL transports over 300,000 lbs broadcast Media Equipment and 22,000 lbs of electronics per team! With the help of their fleet of six Boeing 747 planes.
This year, we would see DHL Cargo unloading F1 Cars and equipment on our own ramp, KFLL and KMIA; While experiencing the amazing beaches of the Sunshine State. No matter what, South Florida will have an exciting year hosting the F1 Grand Prix for the first time!
